The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas

Ah, revenge. I'm one to let it alone and allow God to meet out the justice. But then, I've never been utterly betrayed by those closest to me. This happens to the Count, and while enduring the consequences, he finds the monetary means to exact his revenge. Oh - and he thinks God provided him with the means for that end. Hmmm.

So it is that he first goes about to bless those who were true to him. Obviously, it affects the people around them. If you give a poor business man a diamond, he's going to use it to build his business and help others in his family. The circle widens without any help from the Count.

Unfortunately, the same holds true when you destroy someone's life - innocent bystanders are affected. The ghastly results that unintentionally affect innocent family members and others bring the Count pause, but by then it's pretty much too late.

And does he rest easier? He has an education, a fortune, and his revenge. Left in his wake are the distraught, the dead, a few blessed, and many broken. This is a powerful lesson about the influence and effect we can have on those around us, for good or ill.
