The Mysterious Circus, by Jane Langton

What a fun read! This middle-grade novel was full of adventure, excitement, and magic.

A visitor from India starts a mysterious circus and all the children in the neighborhood take part, whether it's as a bareback rider, trapeze artist, or elephant-dung shoveler. The children learn a great deal in their adventure as they also assist in saving a precious part of their historic town.

Set on Walden Street in Concord, MA, the book explores the connection of the townspeople to Henry Thoreau. My favorite quote cited in the book was "The true harvest of my life is a piece of the rainbow," which was interpreted by the author to mean 'the best things in life are around us all the time.' I might interpret it a little differently: the good I do in this world may be fleeting, but that does not lessen its impact or the difference it made to those who saw (or were a part of) it.
